The Mendel University Botanical Garden has received a new stamp
Adam Kašpar is behind the design of a special postage stamp sheet dedicated to the Botanical Garden in Brno, which will be issued on March 19, 2025. The blossoming sheet contains five species of orchids grown in the Botanical Garden and Arboretum of Mendel University in Brno, four of which have their own stamp. These are the orchids: Cattleya forbesi, Phalaenopsis fuscata, Phalaenopsis cornu-cervi, and Cattleya aclandiae.
The Mendel University Botanical Garden is famous for its orchid collection – with around 2,000 native species and over 3,500 cultivated varieties, it ranks among the largest and most significant collections in Europe. When searching for specific plants for the sheet, the author had a clear idea from the very beginning – the intention was to present different cultivars, shapes, and colors of native orchid species.
The price of the sheet, printed using a combination of offset and screen printing in a print run of 22,000 sheets, is CZK 142. The individual stamps have a face value of 31, 35, 36, and 40 CZK.
For the first day covers, the author chose various species of tillandsias, mainly tropical plants that have similar cultivation requirements to orchids and are also part of the collection. For the stamps, the author chose four species of tropical butterflies that are also kept at the Brno Botanical Garden. The entire print run is processed as oil on paper, the envelopes are single-color sepia paintings, and the stamps are line drawings.
