The aristocracy's influence at Prague Castle was secured by postal transport

The Czech Post presents a commemorative postage stamp sheet entitled The First Postal Route in Bohemia. The stamp was designed by Karel Zeman and costs CZK 109.

The theme of the sheet is a postal courier in period costume on horseback against the backdrop of the Slavonice post office, as it has been preserved to this day. The image is complemented by the Taxis family crest.

The sheet depicts Ferdinand with a letter and the Habsburg coat of arms, opposite which stands the Czech lion in the portal of Vladislav Hall. The Taxis family was commissioned to create the Prague-Vienna route. The sheet also shows the year 1526, in which King Louis Jagiellon died. After the king's death, Ferdinand Habsburg, Louis' brother-in-law, sought the Czech royal crown. The condition was recognition as king by the Czech estates. Ferdinand therefore had the Prague-Vienna postal route established in order to gain greater influence at Prague Castle among the nobility and Czech provincial officials.

The sheet is being issued in a print run of 21,000 copies and is available from today at selected branches and the Czech Post e-shop.
