Orientalist Bedřich Hrozný on a Czech stamp

On Wednesday, November 26, the Czech Post launched a new commemorative stamp sheet from the Czech Footprints in the World series: Bedřich Hrozný. The author is Mikuláš Kavan.

The theme of the sheet is a portrait of Professor Bedřich Hrozný dressed in the rector's gown of Charles University. The background is formed by the structure of Hittite cuneiform writing.

Bedřich Hrozný was a Czech cuneiformist and orientalist, best known for deciphering Hittite writing. He thus laid the foundations for the field of Hittitology. The sheet was created by combining the motif of cuneiform text on a clay tablet with the motif of a rock relief of gods in the Yazilikaya sanctuary, which was part of the capital of the Hittite Empire, Hattusa. The cuneiform text motif is an authentic fragment of a Hittite tablet in which Professor Bedřich Hrozný found the key to deciphering the Hittite language. The first part of the deciphered sentence is located in the section of the stamp.

The sheet has a print run of 20,000 copies, costs CZK 74, and is available at selected branches and the Czech Post e-shop.
