Christmas online scams 2025
What most often cost customers money and how to learn from it.
The pre-Christmas period has long been one of the most risky times of year in terms of internet fraud. Christmas 2025 confirmed this trend. According to information published by public authorities and the Czech Police, and based on statements from affected customers, there was a significant increase in fraudulent emails, text messages, and fake websites at the end of the year.
The most common scenario involved fraudulent messages posing as delivery notifications. The attackers informed recipients of the need to pay a small additional amount, confirm the delivery address, or re-enter their contact details. The links in the messages led to fake payment gateways that mimicked legitimate services in appearance. After the data was entered, payment cards were misused or personal data was stolen.
Another significant area was fake e-shops, which appeared mainly in advertisements on social networks and in search results. They offered attractive goods at significantly lower prices with the promise of fast delivery before Christmas. After paying for their orders, customers either did not receive the goods or were asked to make additional payments under various pretexts.
A common feature of most Christmas scams was psychological pressure. Attackers worked with a sense of urgency, time constraints, and fears that the shipment would not arrive on time. It was these factors that led many people to act hastily without thoroughly checking the sender or link.
Information for customers
Experience from the 2025 Christmas season shows that the most effective protection against fraud is calm and verified action. If a customer receives a message asking for payment, personal information, or account login details, it is always advisable to pause and verify the information in another way.
It is safe to check the status of a shipment exclusively through official websites or mobile applications, not by clicking on links in emails or text messages. Requests for quick payment of small amounts, messages with linguistic inaccuracies, or links leading outside of known domains are particularly suspicious.
If the customer has entered their details or made a payment, it is important to act without delay. It is recommended to contact the bank, block the payment card, and consult the situation with the Czech Police. A timely response can significantly reduce the damage caused.
Awareness and caution remain the most effective protection. The 2025 Christmas season showed that fraudsters are able to quickly adapt their methods, so it is important not to underestimate even seemingly minor warning signs.
